Modern Longhouse Design Largest Challenges Of The 21st Century
Modern longhouse design, MIT Mass Timber Design, an interdisciplinary design workshop at the Massachusetts Institute of Know-how, has developed a constructing prototype aimed at addressing the rising international power crisis, one of many largest challenges of the 21st century.
Widely using wood-based building design and bulk wood construction technology – an increasingly popular method in North America – this project leverages the efficiency, speed, accuracy, and versatility of prefabricated wood construction elements to realize multifunctional and sustainable building.
The longhouse typology, often one of the first permanent civilization structures, is commonplace around the world, but in adapting its construction to address the problems of modern times, the team hopes to create a space built on this rich cultural icon.
Longhouses – by definition – are long, narrow buildings, usually containing a communal space used for civic or group activities. Challenges in construction include very long distances with little or no interruption in space so space remains flexible and easily adaptable.
The design team uses a wood veneer laminate arch (LVL) along the short section of the building to achieve this, with a thin-walled triangular arch profile that provides optimal rigidity to the structure.
Modular prefabricated modular CNC systems are used for most of the remaining elements, which makes the whole installation efficient, greatly reducing the time spent on site. The spacious space created will be used in a variety of ways, including teamwork, sports classes, social mixers, exhibitions, dinner gatherings, and talks.
The recent growth in the popularity of bulk timber is largely due to its environmental benefits. Longhouse Design is built based on this quality, not only planning sustainable projects but also generating energy.
The roof of the saw teeth is angled and oriented in such a way as to maximize the need for rising sunlight and daylight, while the low window-to-wall ratio maintains an efficient thermal insulation casing. The MIT Bulk Wood Design Team is committed to further development and research on such projects, continuing to explore the future of sustainable buildings at the crossroads of architecture and technology.
